Impressions is a creation by the legendary magician and mentalist Max Maven. In this multi-stage routine, a Joker seems to have the special ability to perfectly imitate every playing card he encounters.

You start with a Joker from a blue deck and draw the Ace, Two, and Three of Spades from a red deck. When the Joker comes near these cards, it successively changes into each value. The Joker literally seems to create an impression of the card it is confronted with.

Next, the effect becomes even more impossible. A spectator freely chooses a card from the red deck, and the Joker transforms into exactly this card. According to the creators, no force is used in this process.

To further emphasize the free choice, a spectator can even freely name a card from the red deck. Again, the Joker can instantly transform into the named card.

For the final, the Joker is placed in the spectator's hand without any other playing card to imitate. When the card is looked at again, all the printing has disappeared. The Joker has become completely blank and can then be examined.

Impressions is composed of multiple transformations that continually surpass one another. The routine combines visual card magic with completely free choices and culminates in a tangible change that the spectator can observe for themselves.

The routine originally appeared in Max Maven's book Focus, but the required props made the effect less accessible for years. This edition comes complete with the cards you need to perform the routine.
